Owney received this tag from an American Express company (at this time the company’s focus was on the safe transportation of goods) employee, J.E. Wedehase, of Mitchell, South Dakota. Although they worked for separate organizations, railway mail clerks and express company employees undoubtedly knew each other and Wedehase was obviously familiar with the clerks’ canine mascot.
