Mitchell, South Dakota Owney tag
Owney received this celebration token while visiting Mitchell, South Dakota. The front of the token displays an image of the city’s 1892 Corn Belt Exposition building of 1892. The exposition, which ran from September 28 to October 6, 1892, helped lay the foundation for the creation of the “Mitchell Corn Palace” which remains a popular tourist attraction today. The back of the tag includes a short verse titled “South Dakota’s Invitation” and reads:
TO THE WEST OF MINNESOTA
AND BEYOND FAIR IOWA TOO,
LIES THE COUNTRY SOUTH DAKOTA,
WHERE THE SKIES ARE EVER BLUE.
SO STRANGER COME AND FIND A HOME
IF FORTUNE YOU PURSUE,
TIS A GLORIOUS LAND OF PRAIRIES GRAND
AND JUST THE PLACE FOR YOU.
