Arago: Trade Check Tokens

Owney received this trade check token from Edward Louis Cabish, owner of a Maysville, Kentucky, bakery. Trade checks such as these were used much like coupons are today, offered by merchants as a lure to increase customers’ purchases. This token offered five cents off a loaf of bread. There is no information to indicate when the tag was given to Owney. Maysville, Kentucky was a frequent stop for the dog while he traveled the country.
