Arago: Handstamps

Postal clerks used handstamps such as this to mark pieces of mail that were damaged during handling within the mailstream. The first clerk to detect the damage to packaging would apply this marking and add the location name of the post office or distributing unit. This aided subsequent investigation about the cause of damage if an inquiry was undertaken.
