Arago: Handstamps

This handstamp is an example of basic office devices that aid with the day to day operations of a post office. The handstamp was used to help clerks collect proper identification from customers paying for services by check. The accepting clerk would stamp the check and then handwrite the telephone number, driver's license number, and any other identification information onto the three lines. This customer information was used for verification purposes if the check was later returned for insufficient funds or fraud.

On back side of the handstamp's, base a partial imprint reads: "ONLY TO POSTMASTERS." This notation is a reminder to clerks that checks are to be written payable to the order of "Postmaster."
