Description:
Post offices stamped mail as "UNDELIVERABLE AS ADDRESSED" with the delivering office could not reconcile the address because it was faulty or incomplete. This was the explanation for a failed delivery and why the mailed item was returned to the sender, if that class of mail allowed for its return. Covers with this marking often have a "RETURN TO SENDER" auxiliary marking as well.
