Arago: Pioneer Period (1783-1918)

Aviator Horace Kearney flew mail each of the three days of the Columbia, Tennessee, Fair Grounds Aviation Exhibition. He flew from the substation at the fair grounds to the post office in Columbia, where he dropped the mail to postal officials. Officials used a red postmark with the inclusive dates Sept. 10-13. No mail was carried on September 13 due to high winds. It is impossible to tell on which date a particular piece of mail was flown. The same postmark was used on each day. During the three days, Kearney carried 321 cards and 108 letters on this route, No. 627,001.

This postal card carries the postmark created for the meet - the red, circular stamp with the inclusive dates. Six straightline killer bars with the words AVIATION FIELD cancel the 1-cent Lincoln indicia. The addressee, Karl Koslowski, Detroit, Michigan, actively collected mail carried during the period's early meets.
