Aviation Meet postal card
Between January 20 and 28, 1912, the Third International Air Meet was held at Dominguez Field in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Postmaster William H. Harrison granted permission to fly official US mail each day from Dominguez Field to Compton, a distance of about four miles. At least three different aviators, including Glenn L. Martin (1886-1955), Clifford Turpin (1886-1966), and Charles F. Willard (1883 -1977), flew the mail. Glenn L. Martin flew the mail on the 28th.
Three types of postmarks were used during the 1912 International Air Meet. Type 1 has a small CDS with six curved killer bars. Type 2, which is basically the same, has "Aviation Field" replacing the fourth bar. Type 3 has a larger CDS and four straight killer bars with "Dominguez Field" set within.
This card, flown by Glenn L. Martin, has a Type 1 postmark. The four-line cachet was applied to some of the mail, but not all.
