Union, ME, duplex handstamp
The Chambers shop at Lodge, Virginia, produced this postmarking handstamp for the Union, Maine, post office sometime between 1900 and 1931.
The postmarker head and the oval nine-bar canceling die are mounted on a cross-bar, which is attached to the handle. Combining the postmark and canceling dies into a duplex handstamp allowed a single hand motion to obliterate postage stamps as well as imprint the place and date of mailing.
