used; position 98R. A Ludlow Beebee letter that was deposited in the Boston post office before the mails for New York City closed. It was therefore not necessary to carry it to trainside for delivery to the route agent aboard prior to the train's departure. It is a single-rate letter that traveled over three hundred miles, prepaid with a 10-cent stamp.

The townmark contains the rate mark "10 cts." This marking was made to be struck on stampless covers that were not prepaid. The incorporated rate indicated an unpaid collect rate due from the addressee. Used on this letter, it merely restated the prepaid ten-cent rate.
