10c Washington single on cover
used; position 65L. Dated August 27, 1849, this letter was addressed to Toronto, Canada West. It was prepaid with a single 10¢ stamp, which was a single rate for a distance in excess of 300 miles. The letter went to the Canadian exchange office at Queenston UC. Since Canadian postage could not be prepaid on cross-border covers at that time, the office at Queenston rated it "4 ½" pence collect from the recipient in Toronto. This rate paid the Canadian postage from the border to Toronto.
