10-cent Washington

10c Washington single on cover

Scott Catalogue USA: 2
Description:

used; position 61L. The person or firm where the vast Ludlow Beebee & Co. correspondence originated was in Boston. The great bulk of the letters were handed to the route agent on the train headed for New York after the Boston post office had closed the mails for the trip. This letter, in contrast, arrived at the Boston post office before this mail closed there. It was placed in the locked through mail bag for New York City and at that city was transferred to the mail for Philadelphia. The townmark is dated November 14 of an unknown year.

The 10¢ stamp prepays the single letter rate for a distance in excess of 300 miles.

This particular townmark was created for use on stampless mail and embodies a "10 cts" collect rate mark, which in this case was ignored.
