Arago: Carolina Charter Issue

Carolina Charter Issue

The 5-cent postage stamp commemorating the 300th anniversary of the granting of the Carolina Charter was issued through the Edenton, North Carolina, post office on April 6, 1963.

Designed by Robert L. Miller, the stamp is modeled after a photograph of the first page of the Charter against a background of red velvet. The deep brown lettering is similar to that on the original charter, which was then held at the Hall of History in Raleigh, North Carolina. This Charter is historically significant because it linked the colonies to such basic human rights documents as the Magna Carta.

The stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
