Thd 6-cent Christmas stamp was first placed on sale at Washington, DC, on November 1, 1968. The design was based on a detail from "The Annunciation" by Jan van Eyck, the great fifteenth century Flemish artist. The painting is one of the major works in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
The stamp was issued in panes of fifty, with an initial printing of 1.5 billion.
