1963 Civil War Centennial Issue

The 5-cent Battle of Gettysburg commemorative stamp, the third in the series of five stamps marking the Civil War Centennial, was first placed on sale through the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, post office on July 1, 1963. Roy Gjertson, who submitted the winning entry in a nationwide competition among professional artists, designed the stamp. To the left of the design is a Confederate soldier against a gray background, and to the right is a Union soldier against a blue background. All lettering is white.

The stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
