Armenian-American playwright and novelist William Saroyan was honored by the Postal Service on its 29-cent stamp issued May 22, 1991, in Fresno, California. As part of a joint issue, a similar stamp, with a 1-ruble denomination, was issued on the same day in Yerevan, Armenia, by the USSR Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. William Saroyan's 1939 play, "The Time of Your Life," won him a Pulitzer Prize.
Designed by Ren Wicks, the stamps were printed on the photogravure press by the American Bank Note Company, and issued in panes of fifty. The stamp was the third joint stamp issue by the US and the Soviet Union.
