The 8-cent Antarctic Treaty commemorative stamp was issued on June 23, 1971, in Washington, DC. Enacted on June 23, 1961, the Antarctic Treaty is the earliest of the post-World War II arms limitation agreements and provides that Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only.
Designed by Howard Koslow, the central design of the stamp is adapted from the emblem on official documents of Consultative Meetings. 130 million stamps in sheets of fifty were initially manufactured on the Giori press.
